Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2 July 2026
The short version
- No account, no sign-up. PawLens works on an anonymous, device-scoped account. You never have to give us your name or email.
- Sign in with Apple is optional and only exists to sync your data across your devices.
- The photos you take are of product packaging, not people. We send them to an AI service to read the label text, then store the extracted data in a shared product database.
- Pet profiles are about your pet (species, breed, conditions), not human health data.
- We don't sell your data, we don't run ads, and we don't track you across other apps.
- You can delete everything from inside the app with "Reset app data," or by emailing us.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the PawLens iOS app ("PawLens", "we", "us") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. PawLens is operated from Australia. By using PawLens you agree to this policy.
1. No account required
You can use PawLens without creating an account or providing any personal identifiers. When you first open the app, we create an anonymous, device-scoped account using Supabase authentication. This anonymous account is what lets your pets, scans, and saved foods persist on your device. It is not linked to your identity.
2. Optional Sign in with Apple
If you want to sync your data across multiple Apple devices, you can optionally link your account using Sign in with Apple. In that case we receive only the information Apple shares with us, which may include your name and email address, and only if you choose to share them. You can use Apple's private email relay. Signing in is never required to use the app.
3. Information we collect
Data you create in the app
- Pet profiles: your pet's name, species, breed, age, weight, activity level, neuter status, allergies, and health conditions (for example CKD or diabetes). This is information about your pet, used to personalize the Match layer. It is not human health data.
- Scan history: the products you have scanned and when.
- Saved foods: the products you bookmark.
Label photos
When you scan a food that isn't already in our database, you capture photos of the product's packaging: the front of the pack, the ingredients panel, and the guaranteed analysis. These photos are of product packaging, not people. We upload them and process them using Anthropic's Claude API to extract the label text (ingredients, guaranteed analysis, calorie content, and AAFCO statement) into structured data. The extracted data is stored in a shared product database so that the next person who scans the same product gets an instant result. Please don't capture photos of anything other than the food packaging.
Usage analytics
We use PostHog to collect anonymous usage events (for example, which screens are opened and whether a scan succeeded) so we can improve the app. This is not used for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
Purchases
Subscriptions to PawLens+ are processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat. We receive your subscription status so we can unlock features. We never see or store your payment card details. Those stay with Apple.
4. Push notifications
If you allow notifications, we use them to send recall alerts for foods you've scanned or saved, and a reminder before your free trial converts to a paid subscription. Notifications are optional and you can turn them off at any time in the app or in iOS Settings.
5. How we use your information
- To provide the core features: scanning, scoring, the personalized Match, comparisons, and recall alerts.
- To sync your data across your devices, if you choose to sign in.
- To operate and improve the shared product database.
- To understand aggregate usage and improve the app.
- To manage your subscription and unlock paid features.
6. Where your data is stored
Our database and backend are hosted on Supabase in Sydney, Australia (region ap-southeast-2). Label photos are processed by Anthropic's Claude API, analytics are processed by PostHog, and purchases by Apple and RevenueCat; these providers may process data in other countries. We only share data with these service providers to the extent necessary to run the app.
7. What we don't do
- We don't sell your personal information.
- We don't show ads or use your data for advertising.
- We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't take money from pet-food brands to influence scores.
8. Data retention and deletion
You can delete your data at any time. Inside the app, "Reset app data" deletes your pets, scans, and preferences from this device and the server data associated with your anonymous account. (If you're signed in with Apple, sign out first, then reset.) Extracted label data that has been contributed to the shared product database is not personal to you and remains in the database. You can also email us at support@pawlens.app to request deletion or ask a question about your data.
9. Children
PawLens is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
10. Your rights
PawLens is operated from Australia and we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
EU / UK (GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal data, and to data portability. Our legal bases for processing are performing our contract with you (providing the app), your consent (for example, optional notifications), and our legitimate interests (improving and securing the app). You can exercise these rights by emailing support@pawlens.app, and you may lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
California (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request its deletion, and to correct it. We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under California law, and we do not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. To make a request, email support@pawlens.app.
11. Security
We use industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit and access controls (row-level security scoped to your anonymous account), to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
